Situation in Tbilisi, Georgia
(August 11, 2008)
The current military conflict between Russia and Georgia is affecting operations throughout Georgia. The situation as of Monday, August 11, 2008 is as follows:
OCEAN PORTS:
The Russian military has bombed military targets throughout Georgian territory, and its navy has blockaded the Georgian coast on the Black Sea. The Port of Poti is seriously damaged. This port is closed and all operations have ceased. Most of the containerized cargo currently moving through the port is stored at off-dock terminals, with no damage reported. No verification is available yet of the status of container shipments currently within the grounds of the port. All activity to POTI are being cancelled and diverted to other nearby ports on the Black Sea. All import/export shipments have been stopped. Port operations will resume only when the situation is back to normal.
AIRPORTS:
The Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) has restricted all flights except for the Georgian National Airline, AirZena. At this time, no other cargo or passenger flights will be operating to TBS until further notice.
COLLEAGUES:
The US and German Embassies have evacuated their personnel from Tbilisi. Other diplomatic missions may take action soon. All of our agents in this area are safe and shipments stored in the warehouses are in safe condition.
OPTIONS:
Accordingly, we are immediately ceasing all air and sea shipments to Georgia. Any shipments planned for transit via Georgia, for example to Azerbaijan or Armenia, should also be stopped, as the Russian navy has blockaded the Georgian coast.
Move managers at World Headquarters are staying up-to-date on the latest information pertaining to shipments going to this area of the world during this time of conflict.
