South African Ports/World Cup (June 11 - July 11)
(May 20 , 2010)
We have reports from our agents in South Africa that port workers are on strike in all major ports in South Africa. The report states the strike will likely have a duration of two weeks, snarling shipping lanes and backing up cargo in these important world ports.
Preparations for the 2010 World Cup are under way. The first indication of traffic or transportation impact will be felt in the vicinity of O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The lower level approach to O.R. Tambo International will be closed during the following schedule and the airport authority envisions even more restricted traffic controls around the airport through the end of the World Cup.
“We would like to take this opportunity to urge the public to be patient during this time as we prepare towards a flawless traffic flow into and around the largest and busiest airport in the African continent,” said Assistant General Manager for Operations at O.R. Tambo International Airport, Tebogo Mekgoe. It is during this demanding period when we expect up to 50 thousand people to be moving in and out of O.R. Tambo International Airport on a daily basis, that we want to keep operations as seamless as possible.” Mekgoe added.
Lower level approaches to the airport will be closed during the following hours.
Mondays 06h00 – 09h00
Wednesdays 10h00 – 14h00
Fridays 14h00 - 20h00
Sundays 17h00 - 20h00
