New Zealand Port Workers May Extend Strike
(September 13, 2004)
A seven-day strike by Auckland, New Zealand port workers is on the cards
if industrial negotiations fail on Tuesday reports the Journal of Commerce.
At a meeting Monday morning, workers gave their union discretionary
power to issue a strike notice at any time.
The union heads back into mediation with Ports of Auckland tomorrow,
but says the company has not come close enough to meeting its demands.
The dispute centers around temporary, or casual, workers and has already
sparked a four-day strike.
