Hurricane Ivan Watch On For Florida
(September 13, 2004)
The U.S. Coast Guard at 7 a.m. today re-opened the Ports of Tampa, Manatee
and St. Petersburg, Fla. to normal vessel traffic reports the Journal
of Commerce.
Traffic was restricted as of Saturday night, requiring all commercial
vessels to obtain permission to enter from the Captain of the Port due
to anticipated weather conditions from the approaching Hurricane Ivan.
The Coast Guard said in a statement that if weather conditions do indeed
threaten the Tampa area, port traffic will be notified and controlled
accordingly.
As of Monday afternoon, the Category 5 hurricane was lashing the western
tip of Cuba with heavy rain and winds of 160 mph. The Florida Keys also
are getting a taste of the storm, with Sand Key reporting a gust of
47 mph. Computer models indicate the brunt of the storm will miss the
Keys, but forecasters say it is too soon to say exactly where the storm
will make landfall in the United States.
