Shenzhen is located in the Southern part of China in Guangdong Province. It was the first Special Economic Zone setup by the Chinese government in May 1980 and is one of the great success stories in China’s economic transformation.

Sharing a land border with the former British colony of Hong Kong, the city has grown from a small fishing village of 30,000 people to a modern world class city with a population over 10 million with 2010 GDP of USD 146 billion and per capita income of USD 15,000.

Subtropical Shenzhen is home to the third largest container port in China where foreign companies have invested over USD 30 billion into the city. Textiles, shoes, furniture and toys were the original majority of the manufactured goods shipped from Shenzhen ports.

Technology has played a more recent role in Shenzhen’s development with many high tech firms such as Hitachi, IBM and Microsoft having operations here. Some of China’s most famous companies are headquartered in Shenzhen including technology companies: Huawei, ZTE, Konka and Tencent.   Automobile manufacturer BYD, is based in Shenzhen, which is 10% owned by the famous investor Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway who invested over 200 million dollars into the company because of their electric vehicle technology.

The Universiade Games took place in Shenzhen during August 2011. The Universiade is an international sporting event for university athletes organized every two years by the International University Sports Federation. Over 10,000 student athletes completed in the Shenzhen games.  Previous host cities include Bangkok, Belgrade and Sicily.

In 2011, the Kingkee 100 builiding was completed in Shenzhen standing 442 meters tall. It is China’s third tallest building and the tenth tallest building in the world. The building is primarily used as office space with several floors holding a garden and restaurants. Over twenty-five floors are occupied by the six star luxury hotel St. Regis.

The city boasts a modern subway system with 340,000 daily riders over five  lines stopping at 137 stations.
